CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background
to the Study
The search for efficient, effective mapping and instructional
materials to students in secondary schools has always been a major concern.
This is so as a result of repeated mass failure recorded in West African Senior
Secondary School Examination (WASSCE) Adedeji (2011). Among other factors that
could be responsible for this failure, are lack mapping and instructional
materials which definitely have significant influence or role to play in
teaching and learning processes Oyeniran (2013).
Mapping and instructional materials were
defined by different authors - instructional materials could be explained as
devices through which knowledge, skills, attitude, ideas, beliefs and values
got transmitted to the learner by the teacher in order to ease teaching and learning
process Ahmed (2013).
Mapping on the other hand, is a powerful but simple
way of using diagrams to show information that will aid quick understanding. Mapping
makes it easy to understand, remember, and communicate complex information Afolabi
(2007). Sometimes the brain feels as if it is scrambled because of information
overload, overwhelm, or ineffective use of the brain, this leads to;
(i) inability to solve problems effectively,
(ii) lack of creative thought,
(iii)
lack of focus,
(iv) poor
communication,
(v) forgetting important information.
Availability of mapping
and instructional materials enhance the
effectiveness of schools as these are basic things that can bring about good
academic performance in the students and thus enrollment in secondary school Balogun
(2008).
Mapping is a visual
organizer that can enrich students' understanding of a new concept Maicib (2013).
Using a graphic organizer, students
think about the concept in several ways. Most map organizers engage students in
answering questions such as, "What is it? What is it like? What are some
examples?" Mapping deepens understanding and comprehension. Essentially,
mapping and instructional materials are structured process focused on a topic
or construct of interest involving input from one or more students that produces
an interpretable pictorial view of their ideas and concepts and how these are
interrelated Yusuf (2009).
The importance,
influence of mapping and instructional materials as means of inculcating
knowledge cannot be overemphasized as it will bring about students enrolment in
secondary school Akinkugbe (2010). To
this end, this research study has been carried out to access the influence of
mapping and instructional materials on students’ enrolment in secondary school.
