MANPOWER PLANNING IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY (A CASE STUDY OF SEVEN UP BOTTLING COMPANY IDU YARD ABUJA.)

1.0        INTRODUCTION
1.1     Background of the problem
It is good to say that manpower is the power – house of any organization, because the effective success or failure of any organization lies on the hands of manpower, it is wise to asses all those things that will cause low productivity by manpower in the organization. Because, it is when these problems are noted that solution to them are provided that one can easily say that there is industrial harmony or peace in such industry. Even, it will equally extinguish strike, and other ways workers normally use to show – case their grievance which is also detrimental to an organization.
To spot- out those problems that act stumbling block to manpower in manufacturing industries on their ways to increase the level of productivity, and providing solution to those problems unveiled, can be said to be the main aim of embanking on this research work.
A good manager will plan for the welfare of the workers, for him to make good achievement for the organization without being partial. This research work must surely help organizations that are having problems with its manpower. It will equally guide and help any person, investors, and entrepreneurs that establish business.
The research work is basically on manufacturing industries


Company Description
The seven up bottling company Plc is one of the large independent manufacturer and distributor of the well known and widely consumed brands of soft drinks in Nigeria. The company’s brands are Pepsi, 7up, Dew, Mirinda, Team and Maltina, which are produce and market in all their present of manufacturing plants the company also market their product through their over 200 distribution centers call depots spread over the nooks and crane of Nigeria. During the fiscal year ended March 31, 2006 (fiscal)
7UP TIMELINE
1868: Charles LelperGrigg is born in prices Branch, MissSouri. He is born an albino 1919: Grigg is working at a manufacturing company while he invents his first drink whistle.
1920: c.l. Grigg found the Howdy Company in St. Lovis Missouri and begins selling the Howdy orange drink.
Oct 1929: just weeks before the U.S. stock market crash, Grigg introduces Bib-label lithiated lemon – lime soda. It contains lithium citrate (hence the word “lithiated”) which happens to be a new health fad at the time one doctor gives a testimonial about the new drink, saying that it gives “an abundance of energy, enthusiasm, a clear complexion, lustrous hair, and shinning eyes.”
1930s: the name Bib-label lithiated lemon- line.
1936: Grigg changes the company name from the howdy company to the seven-up company. The soda name is changed to 7up or seven up. The new slogan is “you like it, it like you”
Late 1940s; 7up is the third best selling soft drink in the world. 1950: lithium is removed from 7up
1957: 7up begins advertising on TV.
1961: the coca- cola company introduces sprite to compete with 7up.
1963: release a diet version, called like
1967; begins marketing 7up as “the uncoa because it does not contain caffeine like other Colas the marketing campaign causes sales of 7up to soar.
1970: sugar free 7up is introduced
1975: is the first company to market it soda more liter bottles. Market them with the slogan, “follow the like”
June 1978: The Philip Morris Company acquires the seven up company
1979; sugar free 7up is renamed diet 7up
1986; Philip Morris sells the domestic operation of the seven up company to a private investment group and the company merges with the Dr. pepper company.
1987: cherry 7up ad diet cherry 7up debut on the market.
1987 the masiot spot is born, inspired by the red dot in the soda’s logo.
1995; Cadbury Schweppes now the third largest soft drink company in the world, buy out the dr. pepper 7up company.
July 1996: the company changes it name to Dr. pepper  seven up, inc. later that year they adopt the new sloyan,”  7up  it’s an up thing”
1999: an advertising compaign featuring orlado jones debuts with the sloyan, “make 7up years.

2012: the successful “make 7up years” company continues with comedian Godfrey as the bumbling spokesperson.
2012: dn1 is introducted. It is the 7up name reversed. The product which contains caffeine and is green in color is meant to compete with mountain dew.

2004: 7up plus is introduced. It contains calcium, vitamine c, real fruit juice an. The artificial sweetener, splenda.
Aug. 29, 2005: ads for 7up plus begin airing featuring desperate House wires star, Marcia cress and Nicolette steridian the ad spot, called “super market stow down’ factures the women trying to one-up each other as they load large quantities of 7up plus into their shopping carts.

ABOUT SEVEN UP BOTTLING COMPANY PLC.
Seven up bottling company plc is a Nigeria based company active in the beverages industry to company is engaged in the business of bottling and marketing of soft drinks. Its portfolio of band includes Pepsi, 7up, Miranda, teem and mountain Dew, which are produced in nine manufacturing plants. The product is marketed through a network of over 200 distribution centers in Nigeria. Seven up bottling company plc has operational bases also in Tanzania and Ghana.
Development by creating job opportunity, provision of pipe bone water, and electricity, changing standard of living of the society, scholarship to youths and training of her workers, etc.

1.2     Statement of the problem
The following are the problem that moved the researcher to make proper research on these topic- manpower problems in manufacturing industries in seven up bottling company PlcIdu Yard Abuja

(1)          To know how manpower is being treated in various working environment.
(2)          The problems of training manpower in every organization.
(3)          To know the method of training and development used in every manufacturing organization.

1.3     Objectives of the study.
         Below are some of the objectives of carrying on this study.
(1)          To offer some suggestions where necessary.
(2)          To know the role which manpower plays in the survival and growth of the organization?
(3)          To examine some techniques of developing and improving the manpower of an organization.
(4)          To examine manpower planning in manufacturing industries.

1.4     Importance of the Study
The importance of this study is to know the problems that workers encounter in their areas of work, and give solutions to those problems to increase productivity in the organization.
It is importance to assent here that, if those solutions given are heed by the manpower of an organization they must help that organization to achieve its goal through manpower.
This work will be of help to management students to know in full, what manpower is all about.
This study will be of help to any researcher who is carrying out research work on this topic. In-fact, this study cover a lot of aspect that concern manpower problems in manufacturing industries, and will be ready to answer questions which relate to manpower problem in manufacturing industries.

1.5     Scope of the Study
Below are some of the problems that the researcher faces in carrying on this research work.
One of the problems encountered by researcher was time. Time given for this study was not enough for the study. This was due to short term in the academic year, which resulted in the little time given to the researcher moving about this study and given consideration to other academic work.
During the time of carrying out this research, some workers were not co-operating with the researcher, believing that disclosure of some vital facts needed by the researcher might result in laying them off.
The study was carried out when Nigerian’s economy was bad.
There was high cost of transportation fair because of fuel scarcity.
There was money problem on the part of the researcher as a student that period.

1.7     Statement of hypothesis
The following hypothesis was tested to ascertain the validity and reliability of the hypothesis gathered as it affects manpower problem in manufacturing industries.

1.   NULL HYPOTHESIS: - HO:  Inefficiency in production in most Nigeria Industries is as a result of inadequate Planning.

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS: - HA: Inefficiency in production
In most Nigeria industries are not as a result of inadequate manpower planning.
2.   NULL HYPOTHESIS: - HO: Manpower training and development affects workers productivity.

ALTERATIVE HYPOTHESIS: - HA: Manpower training and Development does not affect workers productivity.


1.8      Definition of terms.
Wrong interpretation or wrong definitions of some principal terms in study works leads to wrong understanding or wrong conception of the study. Below are some of the definitions to some leading terms employed in this study.

Manpower: The relationship between the outputs of an industrial Unit and the input in term of Labour material and capital etc.

Lay-off: A situation in which an employer has to suspend or terminate the employment of a number of workers through lacks of work.

Strike: A concerted voluntary refusal on the part of a work force, or a part to continue to work unless the employers concede to their demand.

Over Time: Hours worked in excess of the contracted number. To encourage employees to work overtime the rate of payment is higher than basic rat.

Salary: Remuneration paid to an employee. There is no absolute distinction between salaries and wages, but in general salaries are paid to executive and clerical employees, where as wages are paid to manual workers.

Output: this is all about the quantity of goods produced in the organization through the use of manpower.
