CHAPTER ONE
OF
RESEARCH PROJECT
ON
THE
SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECT OF UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE NIGERIAN YOUTH
(A
CASE STUDY OF BWARI AREA COUNCIL IN F.C.T ABUJA)
CHAPTER
ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Over the years, Nigerian youths
have grappled with unemployment. It has been noted that some of the Nigerian
youths who are not employed lack the basic educational qualification while some
who are educated have no opportunity to get employed due to corrupt practices
of the Nigerian government and some cases poor technical knowledge. In this
case, the researcher has over time pondered on the growing rate of unemployment
in a country that is so blessed with resources (Human, Mineral and others).
Different thoughts have crept into the mind of the researcher in attempt to
have a well defined perspective to what has now become a canker worm in the
flesh of the social and economic function of the Nigerian state.
According to Adediran (2004),
“the unemployment Problem which is virtually on the lips of every Nigerian has
got out of control along with its social and economic effects. The most
affected by the plague of unemployment in Nigeria today are young school
leavers, particularly graduates from tertiary institutions, and the bulk of
people retrenched from work as a result of socio-economic and political
crises”.
The twenty-first century has been
tagged the entrepreneurial age. This is because nations are being shaped by
entrepreneurs, men and women who have taken their destinies in their own hands
by risking their resources essentially money, time and energy in establishing
and running their own business (Kuye, Oghojafor Sulaimon and Okonji 2009). This
is corroborated by Adeboye and Olubela (2009) that entrepreneurship is the
process of creating something new with value by devoting the necessary time and
effort, assuming the accompanying financial, psychic, monetary, personal
satisfaction and independence.
Bell-Rose and Payzant (2008)
state that today’s young people are not ready to work because they lack
necessary skills, especially in science and mathematics and, even worse they
often lack the ability to work in teams, think creatively, or to interact
effectively with colleagues or potential customers.
If young people are aware of the
issues as well as the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur and/or working as
in small enterprises, they will be better prepared not only with regard to
choosing entrepreneurship as a career option, but also to working productivity
and succeeding in small and medium enterprises (SMES), Sasaki (2006). It is in
the light of this that researchers examined the role and contribution of
vocational education to youth employment generation.

DEFINATION OF TERMS
UNEMPLOYMENT:- This refers as a situation in
which persons of working age, able and willing to work are unable to find paid
employment in other words unemployment refers to a situation in which people
who are capable of working and who are qualified by age and cannot find
employment.
YOUTH:
Youth” is best understood as a period of transition from the dependence of
childhood to adulthood’s independence and awareness of our interdependence as
members of a community.
However, age is the easiest way
to define this group, particularly in relation to education and employment.
Therefore “youth” is often indicated as a person between the age where he/she
may leave compulsory education, and the age at which he/she finds his/her first
employment.
BWARI
AREA COUNCIL: Bwari was part of the Suleja Emirate Council
until 1976 when Government created the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). At that
time, District Officers supervised administration and judicial affairs of the
people. Geographically, Bwari Area Council (BAC) is located at the North East
of the Federal capital territory (FCT), Abuja.
REPORT: As used here means the atmosphere
