THE IMPACT OF UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES ON THE NIGERIA MANUFACTURING SECTOR ( (A CASE STUDY OF WOOD WORK FURNITURE, ABUJA)

CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The conduct of business is with respect to Nigerian organizations shrouded in numerous unethical practices. Several cases evidencing this assertion are found in many organizations like banks, manufacturing companies, service oriented organizations, etc. Several cases of bank failures experienced in Nigeria in early 2000s were caused by unethical practices exhibited by employees, management and other stakeholders. Equally, companies like Nigercem, Niger Steel, AVOP, Oghe cashew industry, Ikenga Hotels, Presidential Hotel Enugu, etc, all
failed because of unethical practices in private sector organizations in Nigeria, unethical practices are exhibited by the operators. For instance, some dubious traders in Ogbette market Enugu cheat their customers by using faulty scales in measuring rice, beans and other consumable food items. With respect to banks, there were cases where some bank employees collaborate with some of the directors to embezzle customers’ money entrusted in their care.

UNETHICAL MARKETING PRACTICE

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1.    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Advertising as a concept, can be defined as a form of communication through the media about product, services, ideas, personalities or organizations, paid for by an identified sponsor writer Alide in Okunna (2002: 99).

Bovee and Arens (1985) gave a more widely accepted definition of advertising as the non-personal communication of information, usually paid for any usually persuasive in nature about products (goods and services) or ideas by an identified sponsor through various media. It is an exciting, dynamic, and challenging enterprise. Its often a persuasive communication in that it tries to persuade the reader, the listener or the viewer to take to the sponsor’s own point of view and also to take some appropriate action. It is not personal or face to face communication, rather it is directed to a group of people.

THE IMPACT OF SMUGGLING ON PERFORMANCE OF LOCAL INDUSTRIES (A CASE STUDY OF WOOD WORK FURNITURE, ABUJA)

CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Smuggling can be defined as the clandestine importation and/or exportation of goods from one place to another. The clandestine operation can involve the importation or exportation of prohibited goods (e.g., drugs) or the evasion of customs duties on legal goods that are liable to duty (e.g., cars, leather, furniture cloths, motor parts etc.). Price disparities and differential customs duties between jurisdictions or across different periods in time determine the likelihood of smuggling (Defiem and Kelly, 2001:473).  It is a criminal act and therefore, illegal because most of the goods being brought in by the smugglers are banned goods. It represents a deviation from social norms administered by a country (Schaefer, 2001: 185). The main characteristic of crime is that it negates laws enacted by the government, acting as the representative of the majority of the people (Akinola, 1986: 8). This illegal act, smuggling, may be counted among the oldest forms of deviance (Jütte, 1994).

IMPACT OF MONETARY INCENTIVE ON ORGANIZATION PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF FIRST BANK PLC)

CHAPTER ONE:

INTRODUCTION

1.1            BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
One of the major problems facing most organizations both public and private sector is how to motivate their employees in order to improve performance. Economy is largely based on the assumption that monetary incentives improve organizational performance. It is generally believed that effect of monetary incentives is unambiguously positive - a large monetary incentive improves employees’ performance.

The issue of organizational performance cannot be over emphasized - the general believe is that employees will not perform to the best of their ability unless they are motivated to do so. Various researchers have come up with various ways to motivate people at work, however, because human beings are different from one another in terms of needs, culture, religion etc. so does what motivate them also varies. Some employees are motivated by financial and other incentives and some non-financial incentives.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL-IMPACT OF MONETARY INCENTIVE ON ORGANISATION PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF FIRST BANK OF NIGERIA PLC, ABUJA)

ABSTRACT

The success of an organization in realizing its objectives heavily depends on the performance of its employees. Performance is considered to be related with the concepts of ability, opportunity and motivation. There are many contemporary research studies supporting the effectiveness of monetary incentives as a motivating tool on organization’s performance. There has been controversy as to whether employees are motivated by monetary incentive.  This proposed research work attempts to delve   into the use of monetary incentives on organizations performance. Questionnaire method will be used to obtain data for the study and the random sampling procedure will be used also in the selection of respondents from the organizations under study. Simple percentage method of data analysis and chi-square statistics test will be used in analyzing the data obtained. The researcher will commence the write-up with an introduction, statement of the problem, objective of the study and significance of study. This will be followed by literature review and theoretical framework. The research methodology, data presentation and analysis will be presented thereafter. The study will be ended with conclusion and recommendations. Based on the analysis of the responses, the following will be identified: that gender, employee’s status, organization performance and preference for monetary or non-monetary incentives.

PROJECT AND PROJECT SCHEDULING IN PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT II (500L)

Question:
How can you define Project and Project Scheduling? Discuss briefly the special sources of problems involved in project implementation.

Solution:
A project can be defined as a scientifically evolved work plan, devised to achieve a specific objective within a specified period of time.
Projects differ in shape, nature, objective and complexity.  Every Project must necessarily conform to some three basic attributes of having:
-      A source of action
-      Having specific objectives
-      Involving a definite time perspective
Hence, a project could best be conceived as a work plan devised through some elements of scientific investigation and analysis designed to achieve a set objective within a certain period.

A number of techniques and mathematical tools like the Gantt and other Network techniques have been used to attempt a systematic analysis and management of projects with varying degrees of success and failure.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT II (PRODUCTION LOT SIZE MODEL)

ILLUSTRATION
Suppose a firm has an annual demand for goods produce at 6,500 units.  The set up cost for each production run is assumed to be N200.  Inventory carrying cost per unit per year is N3.20k, the production rate is 12,500 units per year.
Assume 250 operating days per year:

i.             Calculate the optimal production lot size
ii.            The length in days between the start of each production
iii.           The optimal numbers of production run

SOLUTION:

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT II (NON INSTANTANEOUS MODEL)

Q = Number of Pieces per order
Cc=Carrying Cost
P=Daily Production Rate
D=Daily Demand Rate
T=Length of The Production in days
Co=Order Cost
Please, kindly memorize the above.
Below is the formula for this topic:
Formula 1.           TC = Co  . P + Cc   . Q (1-d)
                                             Q              2      p

TC means Total Cost:  The dot, means multiplication.

Formula2: Q = 2CoD
                       Cc (1-d)
                                  P

Illustration:
Assume the values for the model parameters are as follows:
1.       Ordering cost per order = 0.50k
2.       Carrying cost per unit, inventory per year N100
3.       Annual demand = N4,900
4.       Annual production rate = N9,800 unit

CORPORATE & STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT (Questions and answers)

For: Questions and answers email: theotherwomaninmarriage@gmail.com, you can also follow the blog on face book at israelugbo@gmail.com

Question:
Identify 3 (three) core areas of Corporate Strategy

Solution:

Corporate Strategy is concerned with complexity arising out of ambiguous and non-routine situation with organization-wide rather than operation-specific implications.  The strategic manager must develop a capacity to take an overview (hostility approach) of the situation facing the organization.  Not only must the strategic manager be capable of taking decisions about major issues facing the organization, he/she must also ensure that the strategy is implemented.  Corporate Strategy has three main elements within it as shown below:

1. Strategic Analysis
2. Strategic Development (called Strategic Choice in Johnson & Scholes text)
3. Strategic Implementation

It is important to note that all three areas may well be happening at the same time for different parts of the organization, I.e. a simultaneous approach.

THE OTHER WOMAN IN MARRIAGE

INTRODUCTION
This book “the Other Woman in Marriage” stresses on “Strange Women” and the marriage institution as a whole.  As we read on, the terms “the Other Woman” and “Strange Woman” will be used interchangeably as they constitute major discourse.

Disagreements are common between married couples-including very happy ones, but it could be approached in variety of ways. The way and manner couples handle disagreements may well influence their long-term happiness and togetherness.

The ability to handle situations in your marriage makes you a real husband and not a man.  There are plenty men out there and there are husbands out there, too.  Husbands are those who know what marriage is all about.  They know the biblical definition of marriage – marriage is beautiful and is ordained by God.

Shying away from your responsibilities as a husband only makes you vulnerable to these Strange Women.  Problems are inevitable in a marriage no matter how anointed you are.  In fact, problems are spices that garnish the marriage.  If well handled, it strengthens the marriage - it brings understanding, maturity and unity into the marriage. There must be a problem before victory – you can’t be a victor over nothing.

AN APPRAISAL OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ON CORPORATE ORGANIZATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Towards   the   end   of   1800’s   to   the   early 1990’s, the mission of business
firms was exclusively economic. During this period, the cardinal purpose of business owners is to make as much profit as possible. To underscore the above assertion, Milton Friedman (1972:88) had contended that the only responsibility of the business is to make as much profit as it can for the owners. Today, partly due to the interdependencies of many groups in our society, the values, goals and attitudes of the society changed significantly. This accounts for the complexity in the society in the area of social, economic as well as environmental problems which have been experienced.
